Stress Reduction Strategies

We have all heard that stress is a silent killer, but do you know why? Stress activates the fight or flight response of the sympathetic nervous system. When stress arises, the chemicals released are called adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline increases blood pressure and energy supplies, while cortisol increases blood sugar to enhance brain function. During the release of cortisol, the body adapts to this fight or flight by suppressing the digestive, reproductive, and growth systems. During elongated periods, stress breaks down the body's immune system causing anxiety, depression, digestive problems, headaches, musculoskeletal pain, Irregular heart function, stroke risk, Sleep problems, Weight gain, and executive and cognitive impairment. And this is how prolonged periods of stress can kill you.

So how do we reduce stress in our day-to-day life? Stress is inevitable, and a small amount of it is actually healthy. But if you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, then try some of these stress-reduction strategies:

  1. Massage: the body stores stress in the head, neck, and shoulder muscles. Typically, if it is a financial burden, back problems will appear. One monthly 90-minute massage will regulate and maintain muscular balance if no previous injury occurs.

  1. Proper diet: Some of the most stressed-out people has imbalanced diets. Research has shown that consuming polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3 and vegetables, may help regulate cortisol levels. Healthier food selections support the immune system and repair damaged cells, thus improving coping abilities during stressful events. This decision is a lifestyle, not a daily pill. Pick up some green juice from The Body Temple if you don't know where to start. But speaking of daily medication.

  1. Adaptogens: Adaptogens are stress-fighting herbs or mushrooms that help soothe the sympathetic nervous system by reducing inflammation, improving sleep, and improving the immune system. Some adaptogens are: ashwagandha, asian ginseng, Siberian ginseng, rhodiola, schisandra, and reisha. Take some Supershrooms and breathe easy, homie!

  1. Meditation, Yoga, Chi gong, & Deep breathing: These are strategies, tools, and techniques. Sometimes when stress comes, we look for things outside of ourselves to calm us down. However, it is the distribution of chi that brings imbalance. Practicing movement or mind control helps to reduce static energy and move it up and out. Ever notice where the energy goes when you're mad? Ears, hands, legs, feet. This is a signal of where the energy is in your body. Now that you know, move bi*** get out the way!

  1. All Jokes Aside: Laugh a little. Humor can stimulate organs, activate and relieve your stress response, soothe tension, improve your immune system, relieve pain, increase personal satisfaction, and improve mood. Ain't nothing funny; look at a meme!
